Dominick Cruz set to meet with the UFC to talk about the Bantamweight title and injury
Dominick Cruz will be summoned by the UFC to their Las Vegas offices, as the UFC try to figure out what to do with the injured 135 pound champion.
Cruz, hasn’t fought for the UFC since his 2011 title defence over Demetrious Johnson. He then coached ‘TUF Live’ opposite Urijah Faber but a knee injury ruled him out of the fight, Renan Barao then went on to defeat Faber to win the Interim UFC Bantamweight title. Now it seems like the UFC may need to have a serious conversation with Cruz on whether or not he remains champion due to his inactivity.
Dana White had this to say on the matter:
“There’s a lot of things we need to talk about with him. He is our champ, he is our guy, he needs time or whatever but we are getting to the point now where we really need to make a decision. This poor kid, I’ve never seen anybody with more bad luck than Cruz. And for him, coming back into this division – you know the way this sport is, to be have been off for two years is you know, I don’t think we have ever had anyone be off as long as he has. We’ve given him a lot of time, I like the kid and I have so much respect for him.”
It remains to be soon what the UFC are going to ask of Dominick Cruz but if the Bantamweight champion can’t guarentee a mid year return, the UFC may decide to strip him of his title. Current Interim champion, Renan Barao, will fight Eddie Wineland at UFC 161.
