UFC release 9 fighters including Griggs,Urushitani and LeVesseur

Updated: January 18, 2013

The UFC have released a number of fighters just as they make room for the additions of the Strikeforce signees.

Chad Griggs, Nick Penner, Marcus LeVesseur, John Cofer, Joey Gambino, Jeff Hougland, Jared Papazian and Yasuhiro Urishitani and Henry Martinez are the 9 released.

There are no particularly huge surprises amongst the list of releases, Flyweights Jared Papazian (0-3 UFC) and Yasuhiro Urushitani( 0-2 UFC) have not made the grade after failing to pick up a single win between them. Papazian most recently lost a one sided decision to Timothy Elliot at the latest TUF finale, this was his first fight at 125 pounds. Urushitani meanwhile, entered as part of the inaugural Flyweight tournament but was knocked out by Joseph Benavidez. His most recent fight, a decision loss to John Lineker at UFC on FUEL 6, was not enough to keep a spot on the roster.

At Bantamweight, Jeff Hougland (1-2 UFC) also was cut. Back to back losses (by decision) to Yves Jabouin and Takeya Mizugaki were not enough to keep him around, despite him opening his UFC career with a decision win over Donny Walker. ‘Hellbound’s’ latest defeat to Mizugaki at the UFC China event was particularly one sided.

The Featherweight division has seen a cut too as Joey Gambino (0-2 UFC) got his marching orders after back to back losses. He entered the UFC with an unbeaten record but was submitted easily by Steven Siler at UFC on FX 4. Most recently he was on the wrong side of a decision loss to TUF 14 winner Diego Brandao at UFC 153.

In the Lightweight division, Marcus LeVesseur (1-2 UFC), John Cofer (0-2 UFC) and Henry Martinez (1-2 UFC), also received their walking papers. Cofer a member of the Live TUF 15 season, was finished in both of his Octagon appearances. A KO from Justin Lawrence at the TUF 15 finale and a submission loss to Mike Rio at the TUF 16 finale has seen Cofer cut. LeVesseur meanwhile has failed to live up to some promising reviews on the local scene.’The Prospect’ started his UFC career with a submission loss to Cody Mckenzie. He did bounce back with a win over Carlo Prater at UFC on FX 5 however the unimpressive manner in which he won, coupled with a brutal TKO loss to Abel Trujillo at UFC on FOX 5 has seen LeVesseur released from the company. Martinez meanwhile failed to make weight in his last fight, a brutal head kick loss at the hands of TUF 15’s Daron Cruickshank. Prior to that, he recorded a 1-1 record inside the Octagon; a split decision win over Bernardo Magalhaes and a split decision loss to Matt Riddle (at Welterweight).

At Light Heavyweight, the cutting of Chad Griggs (0-2 UFC) and Nick Penner (0-2 UFC) will not come as a big surprise to many fans. Griggs, who joined the UFC as part of the Strikeforce acquisition, has received back to back losses inside the Octagon. He was submitted by both Travis Browne and Cyrille Diabate. Both fighters showing a glaring weakness in ‘The Gravediggers’ game. Nick Penner also went 0-2 inside the Octagon after being finished by both Anthony Perosh and Cody Donovan.

All of these fighters have officially been removed from the UFC.com’s Roster List.
